Electrolytes Benefits: Why They’re More Important Than You Think

When people think about staying hydrated, the first piece of advice that usually comes to mind is simple: “Drink more water.” However, they may not first think about electrolytes benefits versus plain water.
That’s good advice—but it’s only part of the equation.
Especially here in Texas, where many of us spend time outdoors, exercise regularly, or simply sweat more because of the heat, hydration isn’t just about replacing water. It’s also about replacing the electrolytes your body loses throughout the day.
As a chiropractor, this is one of the most common recommendations I make to patients, particularly during the summer months.
What Are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge and help your body perform many essential functions.
The primary electrolytes include:
- Sodium
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Calcium
These minerals help regulate:
- Muscle contractions
- Nerve function
- Hydration
- Blood pressure
- Energy production
- Recovery after exercise
Without enough electrolytes, your body simply doesn’t function at its best.
The Myth That Salt Is Always Bad
For years, sodium has been portrayed as something everyone should avoid.
The truth is a little more nuanced.
While people with certain medical conditions—such as kidney disease, heart failure, or those who have been instructed by their physician to follow a low-sodium diet—should absolutely follow their healthcare provider’s recommendations, many healthy and active individuals actually lose significant amounts of sodium through sweat.
If you’re exercising, working outside, playing sports, or simply spending time in the Texas heat, replacing some of that sodium may actually help you feel and perform better.
Like most things in nutrition, context matters.
Signs You May Need More Electrolytes Benefits
Low electrolyte levels may contribute to symptoms such as:
- Muscle cramps
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Feeling lightheaded
- Poor workout performance
- Difficulty recovering after exercise
Of course, these symptoms can have many different causes, but hydration and electrolyte balance are often overlooked.
Why I Don’t Usually Recommend Traditional Sports Drinks
Many popular sports drinks were designed decades ago for endurance athletes.
Today, many people drink them casually without realizing that they often contain:
- Large amounts of added sugar
- Artificial colors and flavors
- Relatively small amounts of electrolytes
For many healthy adults, there are now better options that focus on replacing electrolytes without all the extra sugar.
Why I Personally Recommend LMNT and the Electrolytes Benefits They Supply
Patients often ask me which electrolyte product I use.
My personal favorite is LMNT, and it’s the one I most commonly recommend in the office. I also carry it at CARE Chiropractic & Wellness because it’s a product I genuinely use myself.
That said, there are several other excellent electrolyte products available. My recommendation isn’t about finding one specific brand—it’s about choosing an electrolyte mix that provides meaningful amounts of sodium, potassium, and magnesium without unnecessary added sugar.
If you’re wondering, my personal favorite flavor is Raspberry Salt. It’s my go-to almost every day. The newer Lemonade flavors have also been a great addition, especially during the summer.
The Bottom Line
Good hydration is about more than drinking water.
If you’re active, sweat regularly, spend time outdoors, or simply want to support your overall health, paying attention to your electrolyte intake may make a noticeable difference in how you feel.
As always, everyone’s needs are different. If you have kidney disease, heart failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or another condition requiring sodium restriction, talk with your healthcare provider before significantly increasing your sodium intake.
At CARE Chiropractic & Wellness, my goal is to provide practical, evidence-informed recommendations that help you feel your best—both inside and outside the office.
